It is a FAT UGLY joke for those of us who claim to help those with jiggers to do the PR campaigns and window dressing and expect to help those hurting with jiggers. It is naive and arrogant to assume with just one fete in front of cameras we've 'healed' people of a bug that's so daring, so prolific and malicious to say the least. How I wish that was the case, unfortunately it is not that easy. Killing jiggers doesn't involve just one thing. It is not about giving people shoes. Not cementing houses. Not counseling or praying for them. It requires concerted, focused efforts. It takes good time to help especially red flag cases like Fabian. We've labored long with him. But finally, there's light at end of his jigger tunnel. His body weight already testifies to the gains he's made. Our efforts were not in vain, and we're looking forward to a robust man, able to walk and help his elderly grandma, who loves him to threads. This video is intended for educational purposes and to raise awareness of the health problems that jiggers cause in Africa. MEDICAL CONDITION: The condition depicted is known as "Tungiasis". It is an infestation of the skin by a burrowing flea. These fleas tend to infest those who have inadequate living conditions and sanitation. The flea lives both outside around warm-blooded mammals and inside poorly constructed homes. It inhabits dust on floors, cracks in walls and bedding.
